Congestion charging signVote yes for a better Edinburgh

In February 2005 the City of Edinburgh Council will be holding a referendum on its transport policy “Transport Edinburgh”. Central to the policy is the proposed congestion charging scheme.

Commuting traffic levels in Edinburgh have gone up by 70% in the past 20 years, and are set to continue to rise. Currently, over 1,000,000 vehicles enter Edinburgh city centre every week. Yet 42% of Edinburgh households do not have a car, and the majority of Edinburgh residents do not have access to a car for the majority of the day.

The CBI estimates that congestion costs the UK economy £20 billion a year. Meanwhile, pollution from transport accounts for nearly a quarter of the UK’s carbon dioxide emissions and is the fastest growing cause of atmospheric pollution. Not only does this contribute to climate change, it is a serious cause of ill health. Around 240 people a year in Edinburgh are killed by car pollution.

Now is our chance to do something about it – vote yes in February’s referendum.
